Antony Hamilton’s award-winning Black Project 1 is a meditation on the connection between the gravity-bound body and the earth’s elemental force. Body, light, object and sound occupy time and space, exploding any perception of a static universe. In this work, Hamilton’s choreography is characterized by a symbiosis between body, space and objects, revealing unique personal insights into this interplay.
Extreme sensory reduction and distillation lie at the core of Black Project 1; black space, black sets, black costumes and make-up to evoke a unique performance space in which dancers create presence out of absence, viscerally engaged with their surroundings.
Shrouded in darkness, Black Project 1 reflects on the relationship between the inanimate and the living; gesturing to the chaos and instability of matter, time and space.
Antony was inaugural recipient of the Russell Page Fellowship in 2004, the Tanja Liedtke Fellowship in 2009 and a Creative Australia Fellowship in 2012. He was recently dance curator at The National Gallery of Victoria.
